The West Essex Teaching School Alliance has fully-trained and experienced Mentors in all subjects who are given time to support the trainees, whatever the route, into teacher training. There is a dedicated programme of Professional Studies, which is delivered by experienced colleagues each Wednesday, enhancing trainees’ theoretical knowledge and enabling them to put this knowledge into practice.

WETSA is able to call on the experience of a number of staff who work across Essex schools to raise attainment and levels of learning and teaching. This includes Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs).
Primary teacher training
Susan Marbe, Director of Primary Initial Teacher Training, is based at St John’s C of E Primary, Buckhurst Hill. She is the Deputy Headteacher of St John’s and Director of Teaching School (Primary).

Trevor Hounslow is the Co-Director of Secondary Initial Teacher Training and he is the Hub School Manager for the West Essex School Direct partnership (part of the West Essex Teaching School Alliance). David Parker is also Co-Director of Initial Teacher Training and Assistant Headteacher (Teaching & Learning) of Davenant Foundation School.

Initial Teacher Training through WETSA
WETSA has a strong record in Initial Teacher Training and is continuing to build upon the success of Davenant’s Training School status (2008-12). The Government has made clear its intention to focus upon teacher training in schools. There are already fewer Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) places available through Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) while the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) has closed. School Direct and the desire to develop more School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) hubs will see teacher training more firmly based within schools.
The West Essex Teaching School Alliance has now positioned itself at the heart of these exciting new possibilities. It is more centrally involved in its own recruitment for a variety of hubs and partnerships as the leading school. As well as continuing our work with local PGCE providers (HEIs), we have forged a partnership with TES Institute, a modern, innovative and lean organization - with an emphasis on high quality on-line subject knowledge enhancement - working with leading hub schools who recruit other local schools in a cluster to offer places to prospective ITTs.
Wide variety of subjects
Davenant works with several university providers who embrace PGCE courses in a variety of subjects: The Institute of Education for History, Geography and Religious Education; Goldsmiths College for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and Art & Design, Middlesex University for Business Studies, Music and Citizenship and the University of East London for Technology. Davenant values its relationships with these HEI providers. In addition, the School works with the London Metropolitan University for MFL teachers.
We are part of the School Experience Programme which provides opportunities for potential trainees who wish to sample a few days in school in order to help decide whether teaching is the right choice for a career change – or even for a first career. For more details and how to apply go to:
Davenant is a hub school for School Direct Secondary and for Primary through our partner Teaching School at Burnt Mill Academy Trust. We have recruited 40 Secondary trainees and 5 Primary trainees for 2016-17. The number of trainees we have recruited has risen significantly in each of the last four years since the inception of School Direct and as the quality of our training programmes has now been widely recognised. All of our trainees are training in Epping Forest and in Harlow.

From September 2013, School Direct offered a new “salaried” route to replace the GTP route. This is an employment based route for high quality graduates with three or more years’ career experience. The trainee will be employed as an unqualified teacher for the duration of their training and receive a salary. The salary is expected to reflect subject priorities with Physics, Maths, Computing, Chemistry and MFL attracting the higher salaries. Other subjects which would attract a salary are English, Biology, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music and R.Ed. The School Direct Bursary route rates are also to be found on this site but reflect the class of degree as well as shortage subject priority funding.
The recruitment process commences with our open evenings in November. All School Direct applicants must have English and Mathematics at GCSE Grade C or above. The expectation is that successful candidates will have spent at least three days working in a School on a voluntary basis and will at some stage be asked to teach part of a lesson so that we can judge potential.
During the academic year 2015-2016, the West Essex School Direct Partnership of which Davenant is the hub school, trained 28 graduates in English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Music, MFL, PE, History and Primary. All 28 successfully gained either a PGCE or gained QTS in July of 2015. All have been employed either by the school which trained them, or another local school.
